COMMUTER RAIL STATION IMPROVEMENTS
Newburyport, Massachusetts
C&C Consulting Engineers recently completed a study of possible improvements to the platform at the MBTA Commuter Rail Station in Newburyport, Massachusetts. The study was aimed at increasing the efficiency of the current platform system, and improving access for the handicapped.
Currently, the station structure is located on the west side of the track; however, access to cars can only be gained from the east side, where there is an elevated platform. The lengthy walk between the station structure and the elevated platform is one factor that is considered a drawback in developing service provider businesses at the station. The City, therefore, would like to consider construction of an elevated platform on the west side of the track.
C&C obtained plans for the current station and reviewed the existing field conditions to be sure that the plans adequately represented the as-built condition. Observations were also made on the actual routing of drains and other utilities in the area. With this information in hand, C&C was then able to suggest a concept for a low-cost platform modification directly adjacent to the station structure. C&C also provided a conceptual cost estimate for the proposed modification.
This project is currently being considered by the City of Newburyport, as they continue to make efforts to develop ridership and supporting services at their new station.
